Commonly referred to as: Kennedy’s Syndrome, Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy, Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy, X-linked Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy, X-linked Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy, and SBMA
What is Kennedy’s Disease? KD is a rare X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuromuscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body which is most noticeable in the arms/legs and face/throat. It causes speech and swallowing difficulties and major muscle cramps as well as other symptoms.
When does the disease present itself? KD is an adult-onset disease with symptoms usually appearing between the ages of 30 and 50.
Who is affected? Generally, males with this inherited gene develop symptoms, while females with this gene are usually just carriers. It is estimated that 1 in 40,000 individuals worldwide have KD, obviously a very rare disease with very rare funding.
Is there a treatment or cure? Unfortunately, there is no known treatment or cure; however, with your support and your donations this Partyraiser will donate ALL funds to the Kennedy’s Disease Association whose mission is to ultimately find a cure.
